FAQs
How does a TCA peel work?
TCA peels use trichloroacetic acid to exfoliate the skin by dissolving the outer layers of dead or damaged skin cells. This triggers a controlled wound-healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production while encouraging new, healthy skin cell growth.
What can I expect during the treatment?
The skin is first cleansed with a glycolic cleanser, and the TCA solution is applied using a cotton tip. You may feel a tingling or stinging sensation as the acid works, which subsides quickly. The peel is left on for a specific amount of time and allowed to self-neutralize. The patient will then wash their face at home 4-6 hours after application.
What does recovery look like after a TCA peel?
Recovery after a superficial TCA peel is minimal and typically lasts 3–5 days. Immediately after the treatment, you may notice slight redness and a sensation similar to a mild sunburn. Over the next few days, your skin might feel tight and dry, followed by light flaking or peeling as the outer layer of dead skin cells sheds naturally.
This process reveals smoother, brighter skin beneath, with little to no downtime required. To ensure optimal recovery:
-
Keep the skin hydrated with a post-treatment cream
-
Avoid picking or peeling any flaking skin to prevent irritation.
-
Protect the treated area with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to avoid sun damage.
Superficial TCA peels are a gentle yet effective way to improve skin tone and texture without significant disruption to your daily routine.
How should I prepare for a TCA peel?
-
Avoid retinol, exfoliants, and harsh products 5–7 days before the peel.
-
Protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning.
-
Discontinue any skin treatments or medications that may increase sensitivity (consult your clinician).
What aftercare is required?
-
Apply a post treatment cream to keep the skin hydrated and facilitate repair. We recommend Dermaceutic's K-Ceutic - designed specifically to be used with our TCA Peels.
-
Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum SPF daily.
-
Refrain from using retinol or exfoliants for at least 5–7 days post-treatment.
-
Avoid hot showers, saunas, or vigorous exercise immediately after the peel.
Who should avoid skin peels?
Individuals with active skin infections, open wounds, severe rosacea, or eczema, as well as those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should consult with our Dermal Clinician to determine if these peels are suitable.
